Google Classroom: Breakout Rooms

Breakout Rooms is a feature currently in development for G Meet. While we wait for the roll-out of Breakout Rooms, there is a current workaround solution to create Breakout Rooms for your classroom. You will need to create separate Meet events on your calendar to create your classroom's breakout rooms. Once you have done this, you have two options to post the Breakout Room to your classroom.

Create your Repeated Group Meeting for Breakout Rooms
Post the Breakout Meet Groups Using Assignments
1. Go to the Classwork tab and select the ‘+ Create’ button.
2. Choose the ‘Assignment’ option.
3. Add a Title, under the instructions section - copy and paste the link to the Google Meet session and additional information you would like to include
4. On the far-right, you can choose to assign the Group to ‘All students’ or specific students. Tip: By choosing specific students you can control who can view the assignment (Group session) and who will have access to the Google Meet session.
5. On the right-side, you can remove Grade Points, set Due Dates, add the Assignment under a “Topic” but most importantly don’t forget to click “Assign”.
6. Create multiple Google Meet group sessions using the same steps outlined above. The image below shows how the Assignment will appear.
Post Meet Groups using uploaded Materials
1. Go to the Classwork tab and select the ‘+ Create’ button.
2. Choose the Material option.
3. Add a Title and Description (optional)
4. Click on the ‘Add’ button under the Description section and select “File” or “Google Drive” from the list of options.
5. Select the file you created that displays your Group Sessions with hyperlinks and click ‘Insert’. The image below shows how Materials will look in the Classroom:
